WHERE TO GO
Where do Africans go to encounter their ancestors, channel their 'African Personality,' and contemplate discoveries and innovations?
Fragmented by physical and imaginary borders, the African continent faces limitations on mobility and distribution of resources — gold, diamonds, copper, and lithium often serve external interests, leaving many Africans challenged when navigating boundaries of daily reality.
In alignment with the 2024 theme Promised Lands, the Art Across Borders project explored the ‘African Imaginary’ with six artists from across the continent and the Caribbean:
Aurélie Djiena (Cameroon), César Schofield Cardoso (Cabo Verde), Mohamed Monaiseer (Egypt), Odur Ronald (Uganda), Stephané Conradie (South Africa) and Tabita Rezaire (French Guiana).
Set within a 45m² frontier with gold-clad walls, symbolizing Africa's copiousness and contested status. These artists invited viewers to step into a space for communal reflection, renegotiation of solidarities, and imagining futures for continental mobility and resource control in African societies. Their work mirrors personal aspirations and collective longings.
Art Across Borders: Where to Go was curated by Jumoke Sanwo – ART X Talent Advancement Programs Curator.
