Mário Macilau (b. 1984, Mozambique) is a Maputo-based artist who works primarily with photography. His long-term series delve into themes of labor, displacement, and environmental realities.
Macilau began his career photographing on the streets of Maputo in 2003. His professional practice was officially launched in 2007 when he famously traded his mother's cellphone for a camera.
His work has been exhibited internationally at venues including the Holy See Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale (2015), the Vitra Design Museum for the Making Africa exhibition (2015), the Saatchi Gallery for Pangaea (2014), and at Afrique Capitales in Paris (2017). He has also participated in numerous festivals and biennales in cities such as Saint-Louis, Łódź, Lubumbashi, Réunion, Bamako, Dhaka, and Lagos.
Macilau has received several honors, including the James Barnor Prize for African Photography (2023) and the Roger Pic Prize (2023). He was also a finalist for the Greenpeace Photo Award (2016) and shortlisted for the MAST Award (2019) and UNICEF Photo of the Year (2009). His photographs are held in major collections, including the Centre Pompidou and the Quai Branly Museum.
