Edson Chagas (b. 1977, Luanda) is an Angolan artist whose work explores the circulation of objects, images, and identities across cities and histories. He lives between Angola and Portugal.
Chagas studied in Luanda, Lisbon, and London, and holds a degree from the University of Wales. He received international acclaim after being awarded the Golden Lion for Angola’s national pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennale (2013) for his series Found Not Taken, which was later presented at Zeitz MOCAA.
His work has been featured in major exhibitions, including the Malta Biennale (2024), Tate Modern's A World in Common (2023), the Hamburg Triennial (2022), FotoFest (2020), and at MoMA (2015). Recent recognition includes the Smithsonian’s African Art Award (2018) and being shortlisted for the Novo Banco Photo Award (2015).
Chagas has held solo exhibitions at venues such as Kunst Haus Wien, Instituto Camões, and Belfast Exposed, among others.
He is represented by Stevenson.
