Filmmaking is, in itself, an act of open and collective dreaming. The worlds we experience onscreen challenge, delight and encourage us. The 2024 ART X Cinema programme gathered a unique selection of storytellers bearing witness to the desires and conditions of our time. These filmmakers have developed methods of cultural correspondence that illuminate the trajectories of African and African-descended people. In their hands, cinema is a tool for invention, allowing them to produce unique mythologies and ways for us to experience the here and now.
The 13 selected works depicted the transformation that is possible in the process of viewing and creating cinema. As viewers, we were encouraged to consider the effort, participation and imagination required for us to arrive at our promised lands.
